Along the Road: Caddoan Territory

HUNTING
The Caddoans hunted black
bear, deer, turkey, wild hogs,
and rabbits. They occasionaly
went to the west to hunt bison.

RESOURCES
The Neches river provided a permanent
water source for the Caddoan tribes.
They used the river for fishing,
irrigation, and other necessities.
					AGRICULTURE
                       			The Caddoan Indians were good
					farmers. Both men and women
worked in the fields. They grew
					corn, beans, sunflowers, and
                        		tobacco. The main farming tool
was a hoe made from wood or the
					shoulder blade of the bison.

				GATHERING
Even though the Caddoans were good
farmers, they ate many wild plant foods.
				The surrounding forests included
nut-bearing trees such as the black
walnut. Wild berries, like the dewberry,
were also part of their seasonal food
				supply.
