Hundreds even thousands of people have made various predictions concerning the outcome of the Millenium Bug. Some have said civilization will cease to exist that people will become primitive again. Others claim that not a thing will happen. This page is by no means a definitive compliation of different predictions. Listed are are three general prediction of what could occur
Some people believe that Y2K will be the literal end of the world; basically a huge religious event will occurs. Others however predict that all the major systems of the world will go down. These people have been stockpiling food and guns. They believe that the power, transportation, communication, financial, business, and goverment systems will all cease to exist as they do now. Chaos will ensue and only those who are self-sufficient on farms or extremely well-stocked will ultimately survive. This scenario is extremly unlikely. Despite the late starts of many businesses and goverments the problems will probably not be this bad. Most mission-critical systems have been fixed and other important systems are currently being worked on.
Other people dismiss the whole Y2K bug as a bunch of made-up press hype. Some who don't believe much will happen, have actually investigated the topic. They feel that the fixes will do their job and that there really weren't as many bugs to begin with as people first thought. This scenario has a greater possibility of occuring although it's unlikely that that nothing negative will result from the problem. There are too many interconnected systems and embedded chips for nothing at all to happen.
The most probable scenario and the one endorsed my most experts is that the Millenium Bug will be an annoying inconvenience. Many predict possible short term outages in power and possible other services. Crucial services are likely at most to be temporarily cut off for no more than a few days or a week at most. Other non-crucial services might take longer to recover. The economy might be temporarily hurt but nothing major should happen. This scenario is most likely. For most people Y2K will be an annoyance like a blizzard, others might not even notice it. It is hard to tell what will happen exactly but there are strong signs that the problem won't be as dreadful as first thought.
