When that day finally comes you don't want to be caught off-guard. Even the Red Cross is recommending that people keep extra supplies. Most importantly, make sure that you have a supply adequate non-perishable food, water, and medicinesthat will last at least a week. Prepare for Y2K by thinking of what you would need if a bad winter storm hit your area. Make sure you have some cash on hand, gas in your car, and lots of flashlights and batteries. Also plan on keeping lots of warm clothing and blankets for warmth if you live in a cold region of the world. Precaution is still necesssary in the new millenium. Be sure not to use grills and ovens as heaters. When using portable generators, take care, do not hook them up to the home's electrical system. Hopefully you won't need all this stuff for Y2K but it will be useful to have in case of any natural disaster or long power outage.
Most people don't need their personal computers to live but you probably have many things that you would like to keep on your computer. To make sure all your computer data doesn't disappear, get informed about the hardware, operating system, and software you use. Contact the manufacturers and inquire about the Y2K readiness of their product. You may need to upgrade your computer, get an updated operating system, or buy a newer version of certain software programs. Also important are computer controlled appliances in your house. These may include security systems, thermostats, electronics-- almost anything electronic could have an embedded chip. Be sure to check the crucial systems for Y2K compliancy.
