DISNEY
In 1923, in the rear of small office occupied by Holly-Vermont Realty in
Los Angeles, the Walt Disney Company was started. It was at this location
that Walt Disney and his brother Roy, produced a series of sort
live-action/animated films called the Alice Comedies. Because of their
successes with these productions, within 4 months the staff was able to move
next door to larger facilities, and each person involved was now a member of
the "Disney Bros. Studios."
One year later, in 1925, the Disneys began construction on their new studio
in a Hyperion Avenue lot in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles. And
inevitably, over the next 14 years, many changes took place at the Disney
studio: Mickey Mouse was born in 1928, followed by his dog Pluto, Goofy,
Donald Duck, and the rest of the well-known Disney gang.
Then, in 1937, Walt Disney made a huge profit on his film Snow White and the
Seven Dwarfs. With his proceeds, Walt saw a need to create a larger studio
for his growing animations. Shortly after, he made a deposit on 51 acres of
land in Burbank and began designing a modern studio specifically for the
purpose of producing animated films.
Disney’s main concern in designing his new studio was to produce a
self-sufficient, state-of-the-art production factory the provided all the
essential facilities for the entire production process. The Animation
Building, which housed the Disney Artists and animators, was planned in the
center of the lot. Across the street , the Inking, Painting, and Camera
buildings sat. (These three buildings were where the artwork was completed
and photographed.) And the Cutting building, in charge of the post
production process, was located next to the Camera building. Many of the
buildings were linked together by by an underground tunnel, so even in bad
weather, the animation process could continue. To enhance the campus-like
setting, all of the utilities were placed underground (an innovation for
1940).
During the 1940s and 1950s, many prominent animated features were produced
in Burbank, including Fantasia, Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and
Peter Pan.
Over the years, Disney Productions grew and expanded. The company gained
more recognition and more fans each passing day. This company has taken the
animation world by storm and continues to do so with its ever growing and
improving technologies!
