King Tutankhamun

Background of King Tutankhamun

Tutankhamun, originally named Tutankhaten, was a king of Egypt. He ruled Egypt from 1333 B.C to 1323 B.C after the death of his father in law, the great King Akhenaton and his coronet.

He was married to Akhenaton’s third daughter, so as to solidify his claim to the throne. As he was still young at his accession, Ay, who was related to the royal and Horemheb, the general of the armies became the chief advisers who restored the traditional religion and art style after the ‘Amarna revolution’ led by Akhenaton. Tutankhamun issued a decree restoring the temples, images, personnel and privileges of the old gods. He died at his age of 18. Ay became the king after his death, because Tutankhamun had no surviving children. It was believed that Ay married his widow after his succession.
