The Think Computer Success Story Think Computer is a computer consulting firm located in Cleveland, Ohio. I have been repairing and servicing computers since 1995 when I helped a promotional products company, Keene Advertising, Inc., set up Windows-based PCs on a UNIX network. Now, as a sophomore in high school, I am the president and CEO of Think Computer. By reading industry magazines such as Byte, PC World, and PC Magazine, I have tried to teach myself as much as possible about computers. My first computer, a Gateway 486, came with a defective sound card. Through the hours I spent on the phone with technical support I became familiar with the inside of a computer, and, before long, I was able to repair hard drives, scanners, and CD-ROM drives, and could also solve many other obscure problems. My current computer, a Gateway Pentium, has been an excellent tool for me to learn about software that I now use on an everyday basis, such as Windows® 95, Adobe PhotoShop, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Windows NT® Server. I have also been able to teach myself skills, including HTML and database programming. I keep track of Think Computer's consulting jobs with a Microsoft® Access 97 database application called Infocentric. This program allows me to store information on all of my clients, major projects, and tax information. I also use it to print my company's invoices, contracts, contact lists, quotations, and purchase orders. Last summer, I visited Keene Advertising again this time to set up a Microsoft BackOffice® Small Business Server 4.0 network. It allows each employee of the company to send and receive e-mail (which they have found to be critical), run shared CD-ROM applications over the network, and access the Internet. Soon, the company will switch its UNIX-based order inquiry software over to Windows NT, providing the company with one easy-to-use central network. There are many businesses that do not understand how much technology can help them. Some are scared of it, while others may not be able to imagine the possibilities that it holds. Think Computer's role is to assist these companies by making computers work for them, without having to spend extra money on mastering the technical details.
