| The first slaves The European traders or colonists defended their oppression of the native populations by claiming that they were superior to the natives and therefore had the right to treat them as they did. Hundreds of thousands of Africans were chained and shipped away to European colonies. The conditions aboard the slave ships were so bad that a large part of the slave died during the transport. The intelligence theory In the 19th century some scientists claimed that Africans were actually animals, and tried to prove that they were closely related to monkeys. The belief in white supremacy, strongly influenced the way that the colonies were ruled. One of the scientific theories concerning skin colour is that the darker the skin, the lower the intelligence. This and many other theories about skin colour and ethnic background has later been proven to be wrong. |

| Equal to the law? In Los Angeles in 1992 five white police officers were prosecuted for having brutally beaten a black person because of a parking violation. The whole episode had been filmed, but in court the five policemen were found not guilty by a mainly white jury. This caused an explosion of violence that developed into a riot in south and central Los Angeles. In three days 52 people were killed, 8000 were wounded and 12 000 were arrested. More than 1000 buildings burned down. The real reason for the riots were poverty, unemployment, bad housing conditions and a tradition of police brutality. The trial was just the last straw. The most brutal organization in the United States In the USA the best know racist movement is called Ku Klux Klan (KKK). KKK was founded in 1870 and has ever since fought for white supremacy. They have tried to reach this goal by any possible means, including threats and even murder. |
