Death penalty in USA In 1972 the Supreme Court of the US declared death
penalty unconstitutional, and thereby it prohibited the American states to use it. The
decision was made in the Furman vs. Georgia case. No executions were performed from 1972
till 1976, when Supreme Court overruled the decision from 1972. The first American who was
executed after 1976 was Gary Gilmore, who was shot on the 17th of January 1977
in Utah. |
