Death penalty in USA

In 1972 the Supreme Court of the US declared death penalty unconstitutional, and thereby it prohibited the American states to use it. The decision was made in the Furman vs. Georgia case. No executions were performed from 1972 till 1976, when Supreme Court overruled the decision from 1972. The first American who was executed after 1976 was Gary Gilmore, who was shot on the 17th of January 1977 in Utah.
