The surivial of a seed
A seed has a certain amount of breathing point(liberty) which is determined by counting the sides of the seed as shown in the diagram (excluding the diagonals).
From the above diagram, Stone A has 2 liberties , B has 3 liberties and C has 4 liberties. If you still cannot see it, the liberties refers to the white squares.
In the diagram above, the white stone is covered with only 1 liberties left , it is known to be in atari . If nothing is done to save the white stone and black cover the last liberty of white , then the white stone is captured and as a result , the white stone has to be removed from the game or 'died'. It is also also possible to capture more than one stone as shown in the diagram below.

If you master the concept of liberty , then during a battle of capturing opponent's group , then you will be able to tell which side would lose such as one shown in the diagram shown below.
Note: The numbers indicate the sequence to which the seeds are placed. For instance, the white seed with '1' is placed first, followed by the black seed with '2'.
In the above instance, on the next turn, the black will put a seed right below black seed 6 and all white seeds between the 2 rows of black seeds will be removed. Hence it is clear that the white side will lose.
