The diagram above is an example of ladder . By playing black seed 1 , white cannot escape even if he play white seed 2 as can be shown in the diagram.
To achieve ladder , black must ensure that the opponent does not have any stone in its path . In
.gif) , the marked stone lies in the path of the ladder , so white can escape with seed 1 in

. If Black pursues him by playing seeds 2, 4 and 6 , white links up to his marked stone with 7 ; next he can play double atari at the marked area .
However , there are some cases that even when opposing stone lies in the path of ladder , the ladder can still work without flaw as can be shown in

Notice that the marked stone does not help in linking up to the group of white stone and that black play seed 8 instead of seed 9 which is the usual way of ladder .
