False Eyes
Finally , we are going to look at false eyes . As the name indicates , these are not really eyes at all --- i.e. eventually , they will have to be filled in .
In

, the black group appears to have two eyes , but on closer inspection you can see that the eye on the right is not really an eye . White can atari with seed 1 in
.gif) if black doesn't defend at the marked point , then he will lose 3 stones and the remaining stones in the group will be in atari. But if he defend at that point , the whole black group will have only 1 eye , so his group dies .
Hence, players often kill by creating a false eye for the opponent’s group of stone as can be shown in

when black play 1 . Subsequent moves shown in

proves black’s death . Notice that although black sacrifice one stone , he actually gain much more by creating a false eye in the white group and make this group dead points.

Another function of eye other than trying to creating a live group , is the other extreme --- to kill off opponent . This can be illustrated in

Notice that when white play seed 1 to create an eye for own self , it help to prolong its own liberty in a sense that when black seed 6 , he is immediately in atari and white can capture black during his turn . Such situation is known as an eye kill no eye . If white play like in

, then it will result in neutral points (the two marked points) which will be illustrated in expert advice: netural point .
