Joseki(advanced method )

Joseki is a set of moves played by black and white that is deemed to produce the optimal for both side .These moves are derived from the Go basic theory and there is many combinations of moves to produce different results . We shall introduce some of them here .

One example is shown below

From the above diagram , from seeds 1 to 6 , it can be seen that the white occupy the left side of area and the black occupy the other side of the area . Hence , seed 1 to seed 6 completed the Joseki and both side is quite comfortable with the result .

In the diagram below

, the result is white having the corner spaces and black with the side area . It may seem that black have less territory but it compensate in a way that black have more potential in developing and attacking because it has a solid connection and is resistant to attack . Furthermore , white stones are quiet low in postition(mostly in the 3rd line) which makes it hard to develop the center .

is a typical Joseki in which white get the "cash" and black getting the "cheque" . In other words , white get the real territory with little potential for development while black decided to give up his land and try to develop the bigger area which is the centre . There is no right or wrong move here . It just depend on which type of person you are . If you are those who like things that are countable , then you may prefer white in this case . On the other hand , if you are a creative risk taker , you may choose to develop something in which both you and opponent have no confidence ----the center .

This is just a brief introduction on Joseki . There are books to teaching Joseki such as dictionary of basic Joseki by Yoshio Isida published by Ishi press Inc
