Starting of the game
Most players will start opening in the nine marked area as as shown in

This is because corner area is the easiest to conquer . In the above diagram, it take 7 seeds to conquer a space in the center , 5 seeds to take the side and only 3 seeds at the corner .
Also , a good opening will require the stone to widely spread but not too wide
such as one shown in

with a combination of Joseki which is explained later . A golden rule to remember : Conquer the corner first then the side and then secure your territory . And usually put your seeds on the fourth or third line at the start as these two lines are the more efficient line unless it is a Joseki situation or other circumstances which you think is correct to move .

Notice that in the last example , black play two moves successively on the right bottom corner in a shape of a knight 's extension in the western chess . This is to secure the corner territory and also indirectly allow the expansion of territory once it is strong .The weakness is that an extra move is spent in an region which can be slow in getting the worthy space (for example the side territory)
