| Gravity anomalies or areas where the Moon's gravity is either stronger or weaker than normal, causes spacecraft to deviate from an ideal orbit. This indicates that an area on the Moon must lack a complete isostatic adjustment. And deviations from orbital paths occurred over many marina, suggesting that mass concentrations, or mascons, are present underneath them. As an obiter flies over these maria, the additional mass pulls the object closer to the Moon's surface. Mascons are considered to be the result of a slack of isostatic adjustment under the maria. For almost a decade, the scientific equipment packages left by the Apollo missions, sent back allot of information about "moonquakes" and the lunar interior. Moonquakes are comparable to the smallest earthquakes, and around 3000 are recorded annually. A total of 37 moonquake source sites have been identified, at depths of 1000 kilometers deep. Much of the Moon's interior remains unknown, however one possibility is that a mantle exists, which is composed of olivine which is located below the crust. Deep inside the mantle, the Moon might have a metal core in its center. And this core could have a radius of up to 450 kilometers . Even though the Moon does not have a magnetic field, some it its rocks contain remnant magnetism, which suggests that a field was once present. |
