National
Park Sumaco Napo Galeras is one of the least explored protected
areas of Ecuador. The entangled vegetation and the steep hills
make touring extremely difficult. However, its value was recognized
when geologists determined that the region is a refuge for endemic
species since the Pleistocene era. For these reasons it was instituted
as a national park by the government and very probably as a Reserve
of the Biosphere by the United Nations in the future.
