GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Area: 1’279.379 acres (517.765 ha)
  • Date of Creation: August 11, 1975
  • Altitude: 3.870 — 17.160 ft (1.000 — 5.230 m)

Sangay National Park is found on the oriental branch of the Andes mountain range, where the important peaks of Sangay, Tungurahua and Altar are located. It is also the home for the ecosystems found in 324 different lakes and lagoons. The ecological singularity of the zone allowed for the United Nations to proclaim it Natural Patrimony of Humanity in 1983. The park shares characteristics of the Amazonian forests as well as the Andean highlands, creating an amazing diversity of flora and fauna. The park’s life zones are representative of almost all the different altitudes found in the world. Not only is the park important biologically, but its archeological sites have revealed what is perhaps the most important prehistoric Amazonian culture.
