PROBLEMS IN GALAPAGOS

- Introduced goats, rats, pigs and dogs kill many of the local species.

- Whale, fur seal and tortoise hunting in the 1800’s endangered the island species.

- Local garbage increases the danger of death for some animals.

- New constructions diminish the habitat and population of land iguanas.

- Of the original 250.000 Galapagos turtles, only 15.000 remain and four subspecies are extinct.

- Local and foreign fisherman have fished excessively and endangered sharks and sea cucumbers

- There is an increased immigration of Ecuadorians as Galapagos progresses.

- Global climate changes such as El Niño current gravely affect the vulnerable island species.

- There are illegal fishing operations inside the established limits.
