Butterflies

  • Brassolinae: usually brown and big butterflies that prefer the fog of the forest. Some species of this family are plagues for the banana plant.
  • Danainae: some butterflies of this species possess strong toxins in their body. The most renowned Danainae is the Monarch that migrates from Canada to Mexico.
  • Heliconiinae: a butterfly that usually is only found in the tropical areas. Their host plant is the helicon or passion fruit, nutrition for their larvae and source for toxins.
  • Ithomiinae: these are transparent, orange and brown butterflies of the rainforest. Genetically similar races stay together in clans by segregating pheromones.
  • Morphinae: some consider the genus Morpho the most beautiful butterfly for its incomparable hues of blue. Their name comes from the god of dreams, Morpheus.
  • Pieridae: these usually white or yellow butterflies are able to live in great altitudes. They commonly gather in dense groups along riverbeds to absorb mineral salts.
