Aren’t we beautiful butterflies? But unfortunately we are not colored. Do
you want to know why? Master Joe, our painter, once went on a trip to Europe.
There he found several butterflies which you can see on the pictures below. He
even knew their names. He started to paint two of them (that’s us). But he
didn’t have enough color. When he went to buy some more, he lost his glasses.
So he couldn’t recognize which ones he had painted and couldn’t color them.
Can you help him?

Look if you find us on the pictures below and find out our names. Then you
can color us (click on us and print us). The right colorings are in the pictures.
And here are the butterflies the painter had found.

My name is Apollo (Parnassius apollo). I live in the high mountains and I’m endangered to become extinct. I hibernate as an egg. As a caterpillar I was black with red dots. I am a migrating butterfly.

My name is Common Swallowtail (Papilio machaon). We hibernate as brown pupae. When we have hatched, the males gather on the tops of hills to wait for females to mate. I am endangered as well.

I am the Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta). Normally I live in warm, dry areas, in north Africa, for example. But when it gets too dry, we fly north. Some of us even fly to Scandinavia. In the north we lay our eggs. Our children try to fly back when the winter comes, but this is not easy.

My name is Comma (scientists say Polygonia c-album). I live in the woods and in gardens. When I sit on the ground, I look like a leaf. Then you can see the Comma on my wings.

People call me Garden Tiger (or Arctia caja) and I live in forests, parks and gardens. My colors warn predators that I taste bad. I fly at night.
|
|
My name is Death’s Head Hawk (Acherontia atropos) because of the sign on my body. My favorite food is honey. To keep the bees calm I make a particular sound.
