What is a radioisotope?
Although the atoms of an element must have the same number of [protons], they may have
different numbers of [neutrons]. Atoms of the same element having different number of
neutrons are called isotopes. An isotope that emits [radiation] is known as a radioisotope.

Why does a radioisotope emit radiation?
A radioisotope emits radiation because it is unstable.Through the process of radioactive
decay, the radioisotope changes into elements of smaller masses, with the emission of
radiation. The [daughter nucleus] will continue to disintegrate until a stable element is
    obtained.
