24th Amendment outlaws poll taxes for national elections

1964 The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlaws discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin. It gave the attorney general the power to guarantee voting rights and end school segregation. This Act is the culmination of a long struggle by Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, among others, to change the segregation and discrimination that exist in the United States.
1964 Gulf of Tonkin Incident.  A supposed U.S. battleship was attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin, justifying a U.S. offensive on Vietnam.  
1964 Congress passes Southeast Asia Resolution
1964 SDS begins planning first national antiwar demonstration.

1965 President Johnson orders Operation Rolling Thunder.  U.S. sends 3,500 marines to the air base at Danang. Expanding the U.S. role from an advisory one, this action is the first commitment of U.S. ground troops in combat in Vietnam.
1965 First "teach-in" on war held in Ann Arbor.
1965 Johnson sends speakers to campuses, and takes other steps to counter the growing antiwar movement, along with the antiwar sentiment.
1965 Johnson approves deployment of 100,000 additional U.S. troops to Vietnam.  Total troop number: 175,000.
1965 Voting Rights Act nullifies local laws and practices that prevent minorities from voting.
1965 General William Westmoreland requests 443,000 U.S. troops by the end of 1966.
1965 Johnson orders bombing to halt over North Vietnam following pressures by critics and the public.
1965 Malcolm X assasinated.

1966 Napalm protests escalate.  Four California housewives block shipment of napalm bombs.
1966 Bombing of storage facilities in Hanoi and Haiphong being June 29.
1966 First national antiwar "Mobilization" committee initiated.  
1966 Protests against Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara at Hardvard.
1966 Student mobilization committee formed.

1967 Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. comes out against the war.
1967 International War Crimes Tribunal hearings in Sweden, May and November.
1967 Johnson Administration takes steps to counteract peace movement. 
1967 U.S. military leaders advocate major escalation, senior civilian officials urge stabilization, Johnson chooses middle course.
1967 Vietnam Veterans against the War formed.
1967 National Draft-Card Turn-in.
1967 Resistance leaders present draft cards to Justice Department.
1967 Johnson continues to slow escalations in an effort to rally public support.
