Here is our standard reply to requests to use pictures:
The situation about the copyright of the pictures in our History of
Mathematics Archive is a bit tricky.
In the UK there is a committee looking into copyright questions on the WWW
but it has not yet reported. We have talked to the chairman of that
committee about copyright concerning pictures. The position seems to be
that the pictures in our archive cannot be used in paper publications
without the danger that they might be held to infringe some copyright --
either of the original owners of the images or of the publishers of the
sources we took them from, but that the electronic versions can be used
without copyright problems on the WWW.
Many of the pictures we display are in the public domain, but it is
possible that some of them might still be regarded as having copyright
restrictions for paper publication. I am afraid that we have not bothered
to keep records of where we originally found them.
