What are they?
Under the Arthropods, came the trilobites. They too are fossilized animals, dead and gone for quite a long time. The fossil of a trilobite is often extremely beautiful and easily recognizable. To be frank, prehistoric man liked them too ( and not only for eating ). There has been an artifact found of a trilobite, drilled to be worn as an amulet. The civilization was 15000 years old.
From where did they evolve and
when? The first fossils of the trilobites
was around 540 million years ago ( The Early Cambrian Period - though we found
them much later). It is quite probable that the trilobites were preceded by
soft-bodied animals: There are fossils in sedimentary rocks that have a fossil
trace of a trilobite These animals underwent several
changes and at the end of the Cambrian period ( 500 million years ago ) they
were as diverse as possible. There are many trilobites, each with their own
characteristics.
In the Carboniferous and Permian
periods, their numbers declined, but they became totally extinct only at the
end of the Permian ( 245 million years ago ). There are no known reasons why
they died out.
Though
they were about 245 million years ago, they are widely studied and well known.
They are fossilized arthropods.
