Spiders
What are they?
The
very word spider brings to mind creepy crawly animals ( to say nothing of the
cobwebs ). They have eight legs. They use their webs to catch insects - irrespective
of the size of the insect. All of them weave silk, but they need not make webs.
Some spider ( like the bolas ) make a single line with a silk drop at the end.
Then ( like target practice ), throws it at the insect and it's trapped the
insect in the ball.
How do they live?
All spiders have fangs, and they may or may not be poisonous, and are used to capture animals. Some bites can be fatal to humans.
Spiders are helpful as far as eating harmful insects go. Some eat each other
( its a spider eat spider world out there ). Females are generally stronger
and might eat the male ( talk about hunger ! ). They live anywhere they can
find food, some even live under water. There are 30,000 kinds of spiders but
there are many more unknown ones. Some are smaller than a head of a pencil,
other's are more than 25 cm long ( tarantula .
Spiders and insects have a few differences. They are :
Spiders and insects have some differences ( apart from the spelling ) :
Spiders can be classified under web spinning or hunters ( fangs - check, legs
- check ). Hunting spiders run after their prey or wait for them, while others
build their webs. The spider's body
Spiders have different shapes, sizes and colors. They have no bones ( That's
why, when you crush them, nothing breaks in them ). They generally have a thick
skin on top, and have hair or spines. There are two main sections in the spider's
body : Cephalothorax with the head and thorax and chest and the Abdomen. A thin
waist connects these two.
A spider has the eyes on the head ( BIG surprise ). They have eight eyes sometimes,
while other times six. Others may have four or two. Some spiders like the hunting
kind have better eyesight. Some have no eyes especially those that live in the
dark.
The mouth of a spider is not that well developed, it can only take in liquids.
The mouth penetrates the body and sucks the body fluids. The spider can take
in solid mater by spraying the digestive juices on the body and sucking the
remaining liquid.
The fangs of a tarantula point down from the head, but in the normal 'true'
spider, they are crosswise. They can also crush their prey with their chelicerae
( their appendages ).
The legs of a spider consist of four pairs, attached to the cephalothorax.
Each has segments. In most, there are two or three claws. The legs are often
covered with hairs.
Spinnerets are used to spin silk. They are attached to the abdomen rear. Most
have six but some four or two. The surface is covered by hundreds of spinning
tubes. The liquid silk comes out of these and hardens.
The production of silk is from a protein in the silk glands. Spiders ( all
kinds of spiders in all ) have 7 different kind of glands, depending on species,
but none of them have all seven. All have atleast 3, and most have five.
How they use silk :
The spiders ( even those that do not spin webs - the hunting kind ) have silk
glands. They help it by helping the spider can use it to escape from enemies.
If there is danger in the web of a spider, it simply hangs on it or uses it
to enter the ground. Such lines are called draglines.
Many spiders build nests of silk, by using leaves for the job.
