Sparrows

SCIENTIFIC CLASSIFICATION:

Old World sparrows belong to the sparrow and weaverbird family, Ploceidae. The house sparrow is Passer domesticus, the tree sparrow is P. montanus, and the yellow-throated sparrow is Petronia

TIME PERIOD:

It is a modern bird.

HABITAT:

Almost anywhere in the world.

DESCRIPTION:

A sparrow is a small bird. They are generally house birds ( they are not too wild and can live alongside humans ). They have a cone shaped beaks and eat grains and seeds.

The group Old World sparrow belong to the weaver bird class. They have no song but chirp. They tend to feed on seeds of crops. They form large flocks in winter. The common house sparrow is the most famous of the Old World sparrow. It grows to 16 cm long and nests in houses, generally in small space's. They are believed to come from Africa and gone to various parts of the world.

A tree sparrow is very alike to the house sparrow. It is a bit smaller and is about 14 centimetres long. It has brighter markings. It has a copper coloured crown and a small black spot on it's while checks. They nest in loose colonies, generally in holes in fruit tress. They are also believed to have come from Africa.

Rock sparrows are dull in colour ( gray and brown ) with a yellow patch on their throat. They live in dry regions. Most nest in holes between rocks and walls, but one generally nests in trees.

The New World sparrows have brownish markings similar to the Old World Sparrows, but are generally more slender. They often have high pitches songs. They live from North America to South America.
