What are they?
Carnivores are the mammals that eat meat. Most of them lead a life on land ( a terrestrial one ) but some lead theirs under water. They include the sea otter, to an extent whale, to name a few.
How do they live?
The nature of carnivores are varied. Some eat small animals, some are scavengers,
some eat what they can get at. The name (carnivora ) itself means 'meat eater'.
However not all live a life sworn to eat only meat. These also have a healthy
diet - they eat fruits, roots and honey. Even though they should come under
the class omnivores, they are also taken to be carnivores. Lifestyles of the
hungry carnivores. Carnivores bring to mind the image of a powerful animals,
in relentless pursuit of another animal. This is not always the case Some like the hyena are the jungle cleaners that eat
those that are already dead. But sometimes, as time requires, they might even
switch roles with animals that kill live creatures. Their nature varies widely. Some hunt in packs, some lead a solitary
life. But as a rule, Carnivore social organization varies and may be quite complex.
Their means of defence is varied. Many are solitary, such as claws and teeth
( the fitting weapons for a meat-eater ), but some take to fleeing ( in case
of meeting enemies with bigger teeth and claws ). Some, like the skunk, drives
it's enemies away with it's odour. The teeth of a carnivore has some special
features like enlarged teeth, three pairs of incisors per jaw ( with exceptions
). Their molar teeth are blade like ( the last premolar of the upper jaw and
the first molar of the lower one ). There are some exceptions. These are usually
missing or reduced. These features suit a carnivore, for it's meat eating environment.
Carnivores cannot move their jaw from one side to another. The Carnivores are
of two main classes - Pinnipedia ( the water carnivores ) and the Fissipedia
( the land carnivores ).
From where did they evolve and when? They were the first to evolve from reptiles. Triassic Period ( 220 Million
