What are they?
Fish are aquatic vertebrates.
How do they live?
The study of fish has a unique name of its own - ichthyology. Scientists who study this particular branch of vertebrates are ichthyologists.
They divide fish into two main groups:
A) jawed fish
B) jawless.
Almost all fish comer under the former category that is jawed fish. In fact under the jawless category, there are only two species of fish - lampreys and hagfish. The category Jawed fish has two sub groups which is grouped under the kind of skeleton the possess. One of these groups have a skeleton which is not made up of 'true' bones but rather a skeleton composed of a tough, elastic substance called cartilage ( cartilage is found in the ears and nose ). Sharks, rays, and chimaeras make up this group. The other group has 'true' bones - a skeleton composed wholly or partly of bone. Members of this group called bony fish clearly make up the largest group of fish in the world.
