DESCRIPTION:
Eel is a fish, that resembles a snake. It is sometimes mistaken for a water snake. There are more than 500 kinds of eels. Most belong to the saltwater class. There is a lot to learn about these eels. Most of the known ones belong to a class that are both salt and fresh water.
Such eels include European and American eels. The European eels are found around the coast of Europe and in the Mediterranean The American eels like along the coast of North America.
The life of an eel.
A female eel lays her eggs in the spring. Each one hatches into a tiny larva They are transparent. They undergo metamorphism and develop into a tiny transparent eel - a glass eel ( that's it's name ).
By the time the eels reach their respective homes ( The American coast and the European to the European one ) from the common spot where their eggs are laid (Sargasso ), they get a bit of colour. They are known as elver's.
The elver gradually increases in size and turns into a dull yellow-green. They are called yellow eels. At this period ( 7 to 10 years ) they grow to their full size ( females 90 to 120 cm and males 45 cm ). Then metamorphism occurs and they become adults. Their colour changes to silver and they grow larger and can breed. They are silver eels.
Eels migrate. They go back to the place they lay eggs - the Sargasso Sea - to breed. They cross any land that dares to come in their path. They may find their way back by the currents ( water currents ) or sense of smell.
ITS PART IN EVOLUTION TABLE:
They are just another offshoot of fish.
