He first worked as graphics designer for The New York Times, and he spent many years as the art designer for an advertising agency. One day Bill Martin, an author and educator, asked Carle to illustrate a story of his. He had seen and liked a picture Carle had done of a lobster for an ad. Their first book together was Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?.
Soon Eric began to write his own stories. The first book entirely by him was 1,2,3 to the Zoo. He also wrote and illustrated The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which has become a favorite with children everywhere.
Eric and his wife Barbara have two children, a girl and a boy, both grown up. He and his wife live in Northampton, Massachusetts.
