Biographical Information

Janice Grant Berenstain was born on July 26, 1923, in Philadelphia, PA. Stanley Berenstain was born on September 29, 1923 in Phildelphia. The Berenstains met at the Philadelphia College of Art. They found that they had a lot in common and enjoyed a lot of the same things.

During World War II Stan was a medial assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory. They were married when the war was over, on April 13, 1946. They began to work together as cartoonists and writers for popular magazines.

The Berenstains had two sons, Leo and Michael. They decided to write some funny books based on their children and for other children to enjoy.

The first book they published was called The Big Honey Hunt. It was about a family of bears. Later, their names were changed to the Berenstain bears.

The Berenstains have now written over fifty books for children - most of them about the Berenstain Bears. Each books teaches a lesson to the children who read them. They work together - both Stan and Jan write and illustrate. They live outside of Philadelphia in the country.
