Most Olympic Medals

The most individual medals is five, by Krisztina Egerszegi (Hungary) with the 100m backstroke in 1992, the 200m backstroke in 1988, 1992 and 1996 and the 400m medley in 1992.

The most individual gold medals by a man is four by: Charles Daniels (USA) in the 100m freestyle in 1906 and 1908, the 220yd freestyle in 1904 and the 440yd freestyle in 1904; Roland Mathes (GDR) in the 100m and 200m backstroke in 1968 and 1972; Tamas Daryni (Hungary) in the 200m and 400m medley in 1988 and 1992, Aleksandr Popov (Russia) in the 50m and 100m freestyle in 1992 and 1996; and Mark Spitz (see below).

The most gold medals by a woman is six, by Kristin Otto (GDR) at Seoul, South Korea, in 1998: the 100m freestyle, backstroke and butterfly, the 50m freestyle, the 4x100m freestyle and the 4x100m medley.

The most Olympic golds won by a swimmer is nine, by Mark Spitz (USA) in the 100m and 200m freestyle in 1972, the 100m and 200m butterfly in 1972, the 4x100m freestyle in 1968 and 1972, the 4x200m freestyle in 1968 and 1972, and the 4x100m medley in 1972. In all but one (the 1968 4x200m freestyle) he set a world record.

Mark Spitz won a record total of 11 medals: a silver (100m butterfly) and a bronze (100m freestyle) in 1968 as well as his nine golds. This record was equalled by Matt Biondi (USA), with a gold in 1984, five gold , one silver and one bronze, in 1988, and two golds and a silver in 1992.

Spitz's reocrd of seven medals at a single games (1972) was also equalled by Matt biondi in 1988.

The most medals won by a woman is eight, by Dawn Fraser (Australia) with four gold and four silver from 1956 to 1964, Kornelia Ender (GDR) with four gold and four silver from 1972 to 1976 and Shirley Babashoff (USA) with two gold and six silver from 1972 to 1976.
