Gert Fredriksson (Sweden) won a record six Olympic Gold medals from 1948 to 1960. He also won a silver and a bronze, for a record total of eight medals.

The most gold medals won by a woman is five, by Birgit Schmidt (GDR/Germany) from 1980 to 1996. Schmidt has also won three silvers, to equal Fredriksson's total of eight medals.
