Table Tennis

Table tennis is also known as ping pong. It is played on a table 9ft long and 5ft wide. The playing surface is 2ft 6inches above the floor. The table is divided by a net 6 inches high. The ball, made of celluloid or a smaller plastic material, is 1 inches in diameter and weighs .088 ounces. The racket can be any size, shape or weight. The rackets are wooden, reinforced with fibrous material and covered with rubber.

Players take turns in serving 5 serves at a time. Payers must follow strict rules when playing. The server must begin by placing the ball on the open palm of their free hand, above the level of the playing surface and behind the need line. The server must toss the ball straight up, without adding spin, at least 6.3 inches in the air. Once it falls the server can hit it. The serve must touch first on the servers side of the table and then pass over the net before touching the receivers side. For each return after the service, the ball must be hit straight over the net before it touches the table.

In doubles matches the ball must touch first, the right half of the servers' side and then the right half of the receivers side. The first player or pair to score 21 points wins the game. If players are tied at 20 points, one side must win by 2 points. When the score reaches 20-20, service changes after each serve instead of after each five serves. The match is won when a player or team wins 3 games.

Table Tennis made it Olympic debut in 1988. It will be held in the State Sports Centre at Sydney Olympic Park.
