Sailing Between 1936 and 1988 the medals places in each class were determined by the combines scores of seven separate races. In 1992 the sailboarder contested ten races and the Soling class adopted a new format: six races followed by match race competition. In 1996 the Soling class will contest ten races followed by match race competition. All other classes will contest eleven races. Since 1968 each boat has been assessed minus points depending on its order of finish.
At the conclusion of the final race, each boat is allowed to drop its two worst scores. The remaining minus points are added and the boat with the lowest total wins. Between 1936 and 1992 each boat dropped its single worst score. Ten minutes before the starting gun for a race the boats are called to the starting line. The intervening minutes are generally devoted to jockeying for position and penalties are often assessed. During a race the boats follow a triangular course designated by markers that must be passed on a requires side. A boat is considered to have finished a race when any part of its hull or equipment or crew in a normal position cross the finish line. Sailing was introduced as an Olympic sport in 1900.
