Rowing

There are two kinds of rowing events. In sculling events, each rower pulls two oars. In sweep events, each rower pulls one oar. In races where a coxswain calls strokes for the rower, the coxswain must weigh at least 50-kg for men's races and 4kg for women's races. If the coxswain is underweight, up to 5 kg of dead eight may be added to the boat. Men in the lightweight events may weigh no more that 72.5-kg, and women, no more than 59 kg. In men's races, lightweight crews must average no more than 70kg; in women's races, the average must be no more than 57kg.

The contests begin with qualifying tests. The 8 fastest qualifiers advance directly to the semifinals, while the rest take part in a second chance round. The 4 fastest participants in the second chance races join the semifinals. The 6 semifinalists take part in the final, while the other 6 take part in a 'petit final' to determine 7th place through to 12th place. Races have been 2000m long.

Rowing was introduced into the Olympics in 1900. It will take place in the Regatta Centre in Sydney's West.
