The Earth's Atmosphere
- The region extending above about 60 km to beyond 1000 km altitude, where the
concentration of ions is large enough to influence radio propagation. It is divided into several
regions: D (60 to 100 km), E (100 to 150 km), F (150 to 1000 km). The F region is further
divided into F1 and F2 regions, with F2 blending into the magnetosphere.
- Broadly defined, this is the region the motion of charged particles is controlled by the
geomagnetic field. However, this definition includes most of the ionosphere, and common
usage places the magnetosphere's lower boundary around the F2 ionosphere region.
