Just as algae refers to the autotrophic protists, a second informal term, protozoans, refers to heterotrophic members of the kingdom Protista. Most protozoans reproduce asexually, although some take part in complex sexual cycles of reproduction. The following sections describe four significant phyla of protozoans: Mastigophora, Sarcodina, Sporozoa, and Ciliophora.
