What is Linux and why should I use it?

Linux is a free operating system that people use as an alternative to DOS and Windows. Linux's recent media blitz is evidence that this once obscure operating system is now coming into the mainstream, and that the average computer user may find themselves in front of a Linux box -- whether at work or at home -- sometime in the near future. However, though it has made large leaps forward, Linux's usability is still lacking for those unlearned in its subtle ways. This page intends to provide information that will help an average computer user to effectively use Linux.

How do I get around this page?

The <Contents> bar will take you to the main categories:
  • Installation- An installation guide explaining how to download, install, and set up Linux.
  • Configuration- Information on how to configure various aspects of Linux, focusing mainly on the X window system.
  • General Use- A chart of Linux commands and their DOS equivalents. Advanced topics include development, XEmacs, GCC, and gdb overviews.
  • Resources- An assortment of resources aimed to help you solve problems that may arise.
  • Message Board- A forum to share information and ask questions about Linux and other related topics.
