My suggestion is when installing linux for the first time, leave your windows partition in place and create a new partition for linux. If and when you have problems with hardware settings, you can always refer to windows. I know that redhat has an option in the install, but I am not sure about the rest. This will also allow you to get onto irc and ask some questions. On almost every irc server there should be a #linux room. I find the people that frequent these rooms to be quite nice and ready to help.
