Signs and Symptoms of Eating Disorders in Athletes

Bulimia Nervosa

Definition: Bulimia is a serious life threatening disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of binge-

eating followed by (usually) self-induced vomiting or some form of purging as a means of

controlling weight.

  1. A pattern of eating substantial amounts of food followed promptly by trips to the bathroom.
  2. Consumption of huge amounts of food not consistent with the athlete’s weight.
  3. Bloodshot eyes, especially after trips to the bathroom
  4. Vomitus or odor of vomit in the toilet, sink, shower, or wastebasket
  5. Wide fluctuations in weight over short time spans
  6. Excess laxative use or evidence of use of diet pills or diuretics
  7. Edema, particularly in feet and ankles, or hands
  8. Tooth decay and gum disease.
  9. Headaches and fatigue
  10. Perfectionistic: high performance and achievement expectations
  11. Poor self-esteem coupled with shame and / or guilt
  12. Depression
