"What’s Happening to My Body?"

What is natural and Healthy Development in Adolescence?

Girls’ Developments:  Boys Developments:   Did you know…

Hip joint cartilage is designed to respond to the rise in female hormones. Broadening of the hips occurs in preparation for child birthing. Shoulder cartilage is designed to respond to the rise in male hormones. Broadening of the shoulders occurs. There is a great individual variance in growth rates, age of puberty, body size/shape and physical development…every body is different.
Height increases an average of 3.8 inches per year in a growth spurt Height increases an average of 4.3 inches in a year in a growth spurt. Boys and Girls enter their growth spurts at varying ages. Girls generally begin before boys.
During Puberty height increases an average of 10 inches and weight increases an average of 40-50 pounds. Heart, lung and muscle size increases. Muscle mass primarily accounts for increase in size and weight. Body size and shape is largely determined by our genetics. Very few men and women are capable of achieving the"ideal" body as depicted by supermodels, actors and actresses.
Heart, lung and muscle size increases. Girls have two times the body fat than boys during and after puberty. Total body fat is 4.5% at beginning of growth spurt and 15% as an adult man. Almost all media images we see of supermodels have been altered by computer graphics technology, and actresses are often given "body doubles" in movies. Knowing this makes comparing ourselves to these "ideal" images seem pointless.
Fat is deposited on the hips, thighs, buttocks, breasts, arms, and upper back of protection of vital organs, preparation for child bearing, hormonal regulation, and energy needs. Bone density continues to increase in boys and girls up to age 25-30 years. Self-esteem plummets more often in adolescent girls than boys. This is largely due to the cultural pressures to be "thin" and "attractive", in order to be "happy" and "successful."
Total body fat increases from 10% at beginning of growth spurt to 27% as an adult woman. Breaking of the voice generally indicates mid-puberty.
Menarche (first menstrual period) indicates late puberty. Body satisfaction generally increases after puberty as boys become taller and bigger
Body satisfaction often declines with pubertal development (especially with upper thigh, buttock, and stomach measurements.) During puberty height increases an average of 12 inches and weight increases an average of 50-60 pounds
