Anorexia Nervosa is a condition, usually affecting females but also males as well, in which the sufferer has a morbid fear of gaining weight and fat and calories. It is an obsession with being slim. However, it is much more than simply a diet to avoid consuming food and will attempt to eat as little as possible. In the past, anorexia was largely seen as a physical condition, rather than as a psychological one. Nowadays, it is widely recognized as the latter. An estimated 1% of female colleges students are anorexic. Fortunately, there is now more help than ever available. Sufferers are also prone to bulimic tendencies, such as laxative and diuretics abuse; any attempt to purge the body of food.

Compulsive overeating is the excessive consumption of food, often thousands of calories at time. The sufferer attempts to fill a void in his or her life by "filling the soul" with food. Bingeing is used as a release or response to negative situations. For this reason it is also called "Comfort Eating", although compulsive over eating can be far more serious then this. Like all food addictions, it has its links to other eating disorders, particularly bulimia nervosa, although sufferers reduce vomiting after a binge. Obviously, obesity is a problem but this is only a physical symptom, not a cause. The causes, like other eating disorders, are deep rooted and because of this compulsive over eating is now treated in a similar way to both anorexia and bulimia, i.e examining the psychological aspects of the disease finding yourself eating when hurt or angry.

Bulimia Nervosa is along with anorexia the most common form of eating disorders. The sufferer purges the body of food and energy, often through a variety of methods. Self-induced vomiting, laxative abuse and extreme exercise are the three main ways. Abuse of diuretics and diet pills are also associated with bulimia. Binges are also common because the body is often starved of food and of course the sufferer believes eating is okay so long as he or she can get rid of it afterwards. Another method is taking syrup of ipecac, which is a stomach poison intended to induce vomiting in those who have accidentally swallowed something toxic. Bulimia often goes hand in hand with anorexia. It has been estimated that 3% of women have suffered from bulimia at sometime in their lives. Like anorexia, bulimia is also present in men. Around 5% of those suffering from an eating disorder are men.
