Name: Mrs. Rust

Why did you choose to come to New Zealand as opposed to other countries?

“Communist’s took over Burma in 1947, My whole family came over, apart from Dad and Granddad. It took over 8 weeks by boat.”

Why did you leave your country?

“We had to leave in one hour, or change our nationality and language to Burmese. If we didn’t do one or the other we would have been shot.”

How do you feel about the change?

“Great no fear of being shot if you go outside.”

What have been other peoples reactions to your arrival in New Zealand.

“No problem, helpful and marvelous.”

Is it hard to cope with cultural differences?

Can you explain?

“No because, we spoke English.”

Have you had to learn a new language?

What was it like?

“No.”

Would you ever go back to your old country? When? Why? Why not?

“Never.”

What was the biggest problem you’ve had as an immigrant?

“I haven’t had any problem.”

What has been the best part about emigrating?

“Coming to a wonderful country.”
