John White

Why did you choose to come to New Zealand as opposed to other countries?

“My wife is a New Zealander and we decided to move here. I had never been to New Zealand before I had some kiwi friends in London and they were nice so I knew the people here would be nice. I was confident I would like New Zealand.”

Why did you leave your country?

“Because this country has better standard living, and a better climate.”

How do you feel about the change?

“Very good, really good idea. It’s the second best thing I have ever done. (1st best thing was marrying my N.Z. wife.”)

What have been other peoples reactions to your arrivals in New Zealand?

“People think it’s strange that I came from London, a big city, to Whakatane, a small town. People have also been very friendly.”

Is it hard to cope with cultural differences?

“No, there are not really many different cultural changes. Here are some changes: lot more room here. different approach to socializing and drinking. Most people drink at home in NZ Where as England people meet their friends at pubs and drink there. Much more sports orientated. Main sport is Rugby rather than soccer. More formal work environmental in England.”

Have you had to learn a new language?

“No” /NA ! I didn’t have to learn a new language but there were certain slang phrases that I didn’t know: such as

smoko (tea break)

bach (holiday house)

dunny(toilet).”

Would you ever go back to live in your old country?

“No. I’ll go for a holiday there, but I wouldn’t go back to live. I’ve seen a better way in life. The cost of living is too high.”

What was the biggest problem you have had as an immigrant?

“ Missing friends and family from England.”

What has been the best part about emigrating?

“I feel healthier. I love living here, it’s a good way of life. Having Christmas and New Year in the summertime so that you can go outside to enjoy the holiday.”
