 | | Michelangelo's rendition of the Christian tale of the creation of Adam. |
On the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo rendered the miraculous
first event of biblical human history visible - the creation of the first man,
Adam, according to Christian beliefs. God is personified as a benevolent fatherly
figure who extends his finger to ignite the spark of life in Adam in the E.T.
pose.
The spark of life given by God to Adam and all humankind is now in our hands.
We hold today in our possession the ability to manipulate genetic material,
and consequently, life itself. Man seems to be assuming the role of God. But do
we mere mortals really have the wisdom to use this power to manipulate life or
are we really deluding ourselves like naughty children playing with loaded guns?
