White Republic of South Africa

As opposition to the Nationalist government grew in strength and violence, the whites began to panic, fearing for their own safety. But Dr Verwoerd, the prime minister since 1958, had a plan. The 1959 Bantustan Policy was designed to turn the minority whites (3 million) into the majority and the blacks (14 million) into the minority by subdividing the blacks into 12 different minority ethnic groups who were sent to scattered fragments of land which they were supposedly granted independence. This allowed the "majority" whites to run the country in peace.

In 1961, at the Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ Conference in London, Dr Verwoerd campaigned for the South Africa to be transformed into a republic but the other African and Asian prime ministers rejected the idea and Dr Verwoerd withdrew the proposal. At home, 52 percent of the electorate voted for a White Republic and Dr Verwoerd’s dream was realised.
