Classroom Guide
-- Guide to Societies in Transit

The Societies in Transit section has been written specially in 3 different parts to allow students of all level to effectively use the section for learning purposes.

The case studies offer an in-depth examination of three different countries, allowing students to see the actual society trends in action. The specific countries examined are South Africa, Russia and Japan.

South Africa is written as the simplest and most easy to understand case study. It is most suitable for students between the ages of 10 to 15, although older students will still find the case study factual, useful and interesting.

Russia is written for students at an intermediate level. It is most suitable for students between the ages of 13 through 16. Although still clear and concise, the case study goes into greater depth in examining the complex politics and issues which have influenced the transformation of Russia’s society.

Japan is written for students at a higher level. It is most suitable for students of ages 15 and above. While engaging and lucid, it is a detailed examination of the various facets of life and politics in Japanese society. The language used may occasionally be technical but the overall presentation is still fascinating and easy to read.

All resources and case studies are linked to other sections in our site such as articles on related events in the Chronicle. The information provided in the case studies are meant to spark an interest in students to find out more about the history of societies around them, either their own or those of other nations. Detailed suggestions for classroom and project activities can be found in the Classroom Guide.
