The iMac is launched

In fall 1998, the beleaguered Apple computer company launched its fun new iMac, a computer meant to challenge the way people think about computers. Bucking the trend of grey white boxes, the casing of the iMac is rounded and "organic", translucent and comes in candy-pop colours.

The iMac is a computer with colours, a fun computer packed into a translucent case. Since the most fun thing about the computer in the 1990s is the Internet, and the least fun thing is attaching a tangle of grey cables, the iMac has been a big hit. A two tone colour keyboard, and an adorable round one-button mouse are about the only accessories needed to be attached to the parabolic Central Processing Unit monitor.

Within hours of its launch the iMac sold out and more orders just kept rolling in, bringing much-needed profits to the previously ailing company once considered the equal of such technology giants as Microsoft and IBM. Chairman of Apple, Steve Jobs, is unsurprised by the iMac's success and expects an equally warm response to the upcoming launch of the iBook, the iMac's laptop counterpart.
