Founded by British military families, the Singapore Zoological Gardens is found at Mandai Lake Road. The zoo at one time held 30 animals only but expand when the zoo moved to Mandai in 1973. The first few animals of the new zoo included zebras, Malaysian tapirs, Sikar deer from Hong Kong and tigers, cheetahs, lions, rhinoceros, panthers and many other animals. The zoo also has an assortment of monkeys. The most famous monkeys of all are the orang-utans (in Malay means Man of the Jungle). The orang-utans as we fondly know it as the Ah Mengs have breakfast with the tourist for $14. At tea, one can cradle the Ah Mengs’ babies and have your pictures taken. Elephant and pony rides are also available. Animal shows are performed at different intervals. One might also want to buy sovereigns at the entrance.
