South Bridge Road
Favourite tourists sites are the Sri Mariamman Temple on the South Bridge Road. You will see how this Road was the traditional location for goldsmiths, pawnshops and Chinese medical halls. Built in 1827, the Sri Marimman Temple was declared a national monument in 1973. It is the oldest and most important of Singapore' s Hindu temples. It is dedicated to the Goddess Marimman who is known for curing. At Sri Marimman Temple, one should not fail to notice the striking Gopuram or pagoda as the British referred it to. The Gopuram feature the celebrated acts of Hindu deities
Once inside the temple, tourists should look at the elaborate ceiling paintings. This temple'e s most important ceremony is Thimithi, in honour of the Goddess. During the ceremony, devotees walk over hot coals to test their spirituality.
In addition to Hindu s, the temple also draws many Chinese devotees. If one have not notice the two Chinese style window on the walls below the Gopuram, these windows are not found in any other Hindu temples in Singapore. It is believed that these window were special built for the Chinese to offer their prayers from outside the temple.
